Hard Chrome Plating

Hard Chrome Plating has long been used to increase wear, reduce the coefficient of friction, provide corrosion resistance, provide superior release in mold applications and reduce galling and abrasion. In short, hard chrome will improve the efficiency and increase the life of the plated part. On shafts, pins and other high wear components, the benefit of chrome increases in proportion to the thickness of the deposit (up to approximately .004" thick per surface). Whether it be build-up, smoke or flash chrome, our years of servicing the tool and die and mold making industry has given us the expertise necessary to supply the highest quality chrome plating available. At Meadville Plating we utilize conforming anodes and state-of-the-art rectification to insure uniform deposit thickness. Our in-house chemistry department constantly monitors our plating baths to ensure that the chemistry of our baths are capable of providing the best deposit possible. This, coupled with our attention to detail, is essential for achieving the quality Meadville Plating has become known for.

Deposit Thickness: .00002" - .040"

Lubricity: Produces a hard, (approximately 68 Rc) lubricious surface. Coefficient of friction .15

Adhesion: Applied electrolytically, resulting in a superior bond to platings or coatings applied without the use of electricity (i.e. electroless nickel, etc.).

Heat Resistance: -400 to 1300 Fahrenheit. Above 1300 Fahrenheit it will react with carbon monoxide, sulfur vapor and phosphorus.

Appearance: Satin/Matt to SPI A1 finish. Chrome reflects the appearance of the base metal. It can be polished to achieve the desired finish.

Hard Sulfamate Nickel

Machinable Alloy Plating (MAP) is a ductile, electroplated, sulfamate nickel plating utilized for the repair and salvage of mis-machined and worn tool steel, copper, aluminum or castings. One of the greatest attributes of MAP is that it can be machined, EDM'd or ground, and can be deposited in thicknesses ranging from a few tenths to .150" (depending on the location to be plated). MAP is electrodeposited, resulting in superior adhesion to the base metal as compared to electroless applications. Meadville Plating's MAP has been used by companies across the US and in Europe. Through the use of MAP, these companies have realized substantial savings compared to the cost to remanufacture worn, mis-machined, or damaged parts. In the event of minimal design changes, MAP is often used to adapt an existing part to the desired specifications. For extreme wear applications, MAP can be finish machined and Meadville Plating's hard chrome or ARMTEC applied to the finished part.

Deposition, Efficiency and Selective Placement: Map can be deposited from a few tenths up to .150". Due to the high efficiency of our machinable alloy plating baths, we are able to deposit MAP into areas such as small ID's, inside corners etc. Locations that are not feasible, or in many cases, impossible to plate with other types of plating. Our masking procedures allow us to be extremely selective as to the location or locations that will receive plating.

Hardness: 45 to 52 Rc.

Machining: Can be machined, EDM'd or ground without chipping or flaking. It is recommended that when grinding, a coolant should be used and special attention to relative speeds and feeds be observed when making final cuts. Meadville Plating will be happy to answer any questions you may have on the machining of MAP.

Plating Temperature: The maximum temperature a part is exposed to during plating is 220 F, eliminating the risk of warpage, annealing or heat sink.

Appearance: Polishable to SPI A1

Heat Resistance: Up to 700 F

Standards: Conforms with Mill Spec. QQ-N-290A Class 2, ASTM: B689-97 Machinable Alloy Plating

Proven Applications

Molds: Change draft angles, eliminate engraving, repair shut-offs, engineering design changes, etc.

Shafts: Build-up and repair wear surfaces.

Thin Dense Nodular Chrome Plating - ARMTEC

In 1974 Meadville Plating Co., Inc. developed ARMTEC, a proprietary thin dense nodular chrome plating process. Since that time, ARMTEC thin dense chrome has been used and specified by some of the largest companies in the country. The many benefits of ARMTEC have proven invaluable in thousands of applications. Meadville Plating has over thirty years experience specializing in tool & die, machine and injection mold related plating. This experience, coupled with our proprietary plating bath chemistry and state-of-the-art rectification technology allows us to provide a finished product that we believe is superior to our competition. With ARMTEC, no additional machining is required and the part remains in tolerance. ARMTEC is compatible with most ferrous and non-ferrous metals, allowing great flexibility in choosing the base material.

Deposit Thickness: Normal deposit is .00005" per surface. ARMTEC will not affect a buildup of more than .0001" under normal circumstances. If required additional ARMTEC can be applied.

Lubricity: ARMTEC produces a super hard, 72 Rc (1100 Vickers) microscopic nodular surface that reduces surface contact area, thereby decreasing the coefficient of friction and enhancing the benefits of lubricants. Add to this, the natural lubricity of chromium, and you have an outstanding coating for reducing wear and friction, preventing galling and seizing, and improving mold release.

Corrosion Protection: ARMTEC has an extremely dense structure. This density provides excellent corrosion resistance.

Adhesion: ARMTEC thin dense chrome is applied electrolytically, resulting in a bond superior to platings or coatings applied without the use of electricity (i.e. electroless nickel, etc.). ARMTEC will not crack, peel, flake, chip or separate from the base metal in any way. It can be stripped if the need arises.

Heat Resistance: -400 to 1300 Fahrenheit. Above 1300 Fahrenheit it will react with carbon monoxide, sulfur vapor and phosphorus. Hardness and wear resistance will be reduced, to a small degree, above 700 Fahrenheit.

Appearance: ARMTEC thin dense chrome has a satin finish appearance. This finish is very repeatable, allowing for different base metals to be plated and used in the same assembly while providing an attractive uniformed finish.

Standards: Conforms with ASTM-B177, AMS-2438a (10/98), ASM-2406, Mill Spec. QQ-C-320B Class 2 Type 2, USDA/FDA compliant for use on food processing equipment and pharmaceutical applications.

Turning, Grinding and General Machining

New Fabrication

Meadville Plating's highly trained machining department can manufacture new cylindrical products or components such as hydraulic components, pump shafts and numerous other items to your specifications. Cylindrical grinder and lathe capacities of up to 20" diameters and 72" in length and weight capacities of 1500 lbs. allows us to manufacture and repair a large range of different sized pieces.

Repair and Salvage

Meadville Plating has the in-house capabilities to machine, plate and finish machine or grind, damaged cylindrical products or components to exacting specifications. Our ability to apply our machinable alloy plating or hard chrome to a worn or mis-machined surface and re-machine to original specifications allows us to repair parts that would not otherwise be salvageable. When utilizing hard chrome for repair, the additional hard chrome applied to the part often times increases the life of the part two to three times over the original manufactured product. The fact that we are able to complete the entire repair process at one location allows us to offer superior turnaround at very competitive prices.

Electroless Nickel

Electroless nickel plating is an autocatalytic chemical reaction of nickel deposits on a substrate in an aqueous solution. All of our baths are without electrical current, and the end result is a hard uniformed deposit. No matter the configuration of the substrate being plated, such as grooves, threads or deep bores, a uniform deposit will be achieved.
